HP 15C Calculator App Reviews

Five stars for retro look, 3 for value

Like the RPN fan that I am, I bought this. I dont regret it but it really is overpriced. I feel like I paid $10 for the calculator and $5 for the pretty graphics. But that is not a complaint. You may wish to also consider PCalc and other great RPN calculators on the App Store but be sure they are programmable if you need that.

OK app. But pricey. Needs polishing.

Im still waiting for HP to fix this app and it will become my first choice calc. for now its in a folder on page 7. Ive never had a calculator that sounds like this when I press a key. HP this is stupid. Fix the click. Dont buy this until its updated. The sound of the keys is an obnoxious clunk and the volume is only controlled by the master volume. I wish it was controllable without turning down the volume of my ringer and other apps and a more subtle "click" It seems like the "target" area for the buttons (iPhone) is a bit small. I miss the buttons with this app more often than with others calculator apps. Its very close to being great, but these small items keep me from wanting to use it. I cant afford mistakes from missing buttons in my job. Having invested $15, I hope HP is responsive and fixes these items. Until then I have a better, less expensive 48sx emulator with bigger buttons and a viewable stack.

Hp15C

This is a great app for one of the best calculators ever made. Pricey for an app but cheap compared to buying on of the real things. Many are complaining about the clicking of the keys and rightfully so. However, just go into the iphone Settings, scroll down to the HP15C program and there is a setting to turn this off.

Needs an update for iPhone 5

The landscape mode on iPhone 5 does not use all screen real estate. The title bar with time and so on is unnecessary and takes up valuable space. The screen also does not use all the iPhone 5s space leaving two black bars on the side. Another waste. Needs an update to make it a real FULL SCREEN APP on iPhone 5.

Needs some tweaks.

Good RPN calculator. Needs a softer key click sound, especially since it doesnt seem to change with the iPhone volume control. Couldnt get key vibrate to work. Havent done any programming, but satisfied so far. Wish it cost less but the other RPN calculators on the market didnt feel quite "right".

Needs Updated

Badly needs an update and has been neglected by HP.

Usual complaints

As others have reported, the shadow in the LCD is annoying and the graphics on my iPad Mini is not sharp.

Clicking sound is really annoying

I like the app very much as it replaces an HP11C calculator emulator I had been using. The sound however is really annoying and sounds more like a manual typewriter key than the true calculator button my HP11C and 15C physical calculators actually make. Please offer an option to turn off the sound. And please replace the sound with the real thing. You emulated the calculator very well, how about the button click?

Very Nice!

Seems to emulate 15C functions perfectly, but I have not yet checked out programming capabilities. For those that find the key clicking annoying, it can be disabled by going into your iDevice settings, scroll down until you see "15C", and the first option is to enable/disable the key clicks.

Second best 15c calculator

Other implementations are half of the price and function better. The vibration feedback way too long. The App is still not sized for the full iPhone 5, 5s, or 5c display. Cmon HP be the best out there or bow out.... This looks bad.

Now virtually perfect

The key-click control actually has to be changed in your phones Settings menu , not from within the app itself; thats fine. At least the horrible key clicks can now be turned off. The slight tweaks to the look are good. Im glad to has CLR X on the portrait-mode keyboard; I would have preferred BSP, but CLR X is ok. Now, this app is just excellent. This is an essential app for me.

Very well done

Update: Now that the iPhone 5 has been out for a year, its shameful that HP has not bothered to do an update. So much wasted screen space. And the poorly implemented clicking is starting to bother me and my coworkers. Otherwise... A great app to have on the iPhone when I dont have my 15C LE with me. HP doesnt mention it in the description, but the app uses razor sharp Retina images. The portrait-mode with the big buttons is a nice touch and suitable for most of my calculating needs. The full landscape mode, although small, is nearly as easy to use. I feel fortunate not to be disturbed by the key-click sound, although I agree that folks that dont like it should be able to turn it off from within the app. I really appreciate the manual being accessible from the app. I have tried 2 other 11C/15C iPhone apps, but they dont have the attention to detail that HP has put into this. Pricey by app standards, but cheap by quality calculator standards. Highly recommended.

Very Disappointing, waste of my money

I had purchased the earlier version of the app but they stopped supporting it so I had to pay for it again to download it to my iPad Air. It was expensive enough the first time and to pay for it again was such an unfortunate waste. I had hoped they had improved upon it, most critically adding cut and paste support. Unfortunately no, they had only reissued it due to a digital signature snafu with Apple that caused my version to be obsolete. In fact they had hardly changed the app at all, mostly just to add the phrase "Limited Edition" to the app. Very disappointing.

HP 15C

Best programmable RPN scientific calculator around!

Details! Can silence clicks. Awesome – with MINOR flaws.

Awesome to have this! Key clicks are WAY too loud (need volume control!) but CAN be silenced in the Settings app. (Scroll down to "HP 15C".) Its a shame that the Key Vibrate feature seems to have no effect (iPhone 5S/iOS 7): some reasonable key press feedback would be nice! One of the very handy bonus features of this implementation over others of its kind is access to the HP-15C manual from the Menu (and without going out on the web: self-contained!) Alas, its not the most recent version (e.g. p. 261 has the erroneous Self Test instructions for the LE version.) But its still quite useful along side an actual 15C! Unfortunately, the landscape lock setting (again, through the Settings app) affects the manual reader as well as the calculator skin. On an iPhone, its easier to read in portrait even when the skin is fixed in landscape. It would be nice to have the Advanced Functions manual available this way as well. What also sets this emulator apart from others is that its faithful in certain details: STO RAN# works to set the random number seed, for example. Given the 15Cs legendary but sane key function overloading, theres a good chance that only HP (with access to their original ARM source code fir the LE) could get all these details right. All-in-all, despite a few minor issues, I was delighted to pay to have this wonderful "device" always with me on my phone! Thank you, HP, for finding ways to go that extra mile for us loyal users. (Say what you will of "the golden years", no other company would even consider doing some of the things that HP continues to do for us!)

Great App...

Love the app! Clicking noise is annoying. It would be great if future update would allow user to lower or turn off sound.

Perfect but for one fixable issue

HP just needs to update the app to properly use the new vector graphics like all the other ios apps. It feels a tad "crunchy" visually (because its using raster images) on an ipad with retinae display. Otherwise I LOVE this app. I use it multiple times daily - every day. I especially like the portrait mode simplified layout which I use 90% of the time. For the person who complained that its missing trig. You must be locked in portrait mode. Try it again - but allow the app to flip between portrait and landscape mode. you wont be disappointed.

A classic

Update: Its been almost two years since this app was last updated. It still doesnt make use of the larger iPhone 5 screen. The bug that causes the display to flash after running a program or using the combinations/permutations functions still hasnt been fixed. And, theres still no way to control the key click volume independently. Its a shame that HP seems to have abandoned this app... -- Its great to have an authentic HP 15C on my iPhone. Ive been a fan of HPs RPN calculators for years, starting with the trusty HP 25 that got me through college. The built-in manual and alternate portrait layout are nice additions. One bug: After using either the combinations (Cy,x) or permutations (Py,x) statistical functions, the display flashes continuously until some other key is pressed (on my iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1, anyway). Also, as others have noted, the key click sound is annoying to the point where Ive muted it entirely. It would be nice to have a choice of sounds or the ability to control the volume separately.

Disappointing

I owned and operated an HP15c for 30 years. The real thing worked flawlessly. This attempt to emulate the 15c is disappointing. I use the programming mode a lot. This version does not understand GSB logic. I wish I could get my money back. It is a good RPN calculator, but not a programmable HP15c.

HP-15C Limited Functionality

After Apple did the last upgrade to my iPhone5, the HP-15C no longer will change from a limited display of features to a full display when my iPhone is rotated 90 degrees. I have reloaded the app several times without success in obtaining the full functionality. Several friends have experienced the same loss of functionality - how do I obtain full functionality?
